Lady Gan
The Romance of the Three KingdomsLady Gan’s brief appearance during the flight from Changban gives the mass displacement of Xuande’s followers a personal scale: separated from Lady Mi and the child, she walks barefoot and ragged among the fleeing people until Zhao Zilong finds and escorts her toward safety. The episode presents her as a member of the household caught in the collapse of the retreat, while the search for the missing child continues around her.
Identity and Place in the Story
The supplied account identifies Lady Gan as one of the women traveling with Xuande’s people during their flight. Her role in this episode is defined by the immediate circumstances of that retreat rather than by a separate account of her background or life. She is among a crowd of more than two hundred men and women when Zhao Zilong catches up with her.
Separation During the Flight
Lady Gan tells Zhao Zilong that she and Lady Mi had left their carriage and joined the people on foot. When soldiers appeared amid the confusion, the two women were separated. Lady Gan does not know where Lady Mi or the child has gone, so her reunion with Zhao Zilong resolves only part of the crisis: the child and Lady Mi remain unaccounted for.
Rescue and Continued Search
Zhao Zilong finds Lady Gan walking barefoot and ragged in the crowd. He leaps from his horse, acknowledges his responsibility for what has happened, and asks after Lady Mi and the child. Soon afterward, soldiers bring Mi Zhu as a prisoner. Zhao Zilong attacks the troop, rescues him, and captures two horses. He places Lady Gan on one horse and Mi Zhu on the other, then sends them ahead to find Xuande.
The rescue does not end Zhao Zilong’s search. As the party nears the bridge guarded by Zhang Fei, Zhang Fei suspects Zhao Zilong of betrayal, having heard a misleading account from Jian Yong. Zhao Zilong explains that he has been searching for the women and child; Zhang Fei accepts the explanation only because he recognizes the report’s source. Zhao Zilong then entrusts Lady Gan to Mi Zhu and turns back toward the battle to continue looking for Lady Mi and the child.
Narrative Significance
The episode distinguishes between getting one person to safety and completing the larger rescue. Lady Gan’s reunion with Mi Zhu and her onward journey toward Xuande provide a limited success amid the retreat, but her separation from Lady Mi and the child keeps the danger unresolved. Her passage from the exposed crowd into the care of Mi Zhu also makes the consequences of the flight visible through a specific household rather than through military movement alone.
